African Wild Dog Information

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is a carnivorous mammal, member of the Canidae family. Other members of the Canidae family include jackals, foxes, coyotes, wolves, dingoes, and domestic dogs. The African wild dog is found in Africa, and inhabits grasslands, savannas, and woodlands. It is also called Cape hunting dog or painted dog. These animals are similar in size and shape to domestic dogs, but have big rounded ears, a bushy tail and a colorful, patchy coat. Each African wild dog has its unique coat pattern. The average African wild dog weighs 55-80 pounds and measures 24-30 inches high. Unfortunately, the African wild dog is Africa's most endangered carnivore. Less than 5,000 African wild dogs remained in the wild.
